VMware Appliance (SuSE) – Installing additional software.

More and more VMware products comes as appliances. All of them are based on SuSE Linux Enterprise and is quite truncated in terms of functionality of Linux itself. Installed is just what is needed to operate the application. This is an appropriate concept which assumes that the user should not “mix” so as not broke application runtime. Unfortunately, often we lack the program so much that we have to install it yourself. I was forced to installing “zip” command in vRealize Hyperic 5.8.4 appliance.

vRealize Hyperic (Tomcat 6) – ERR_SSL_WEAK_SERVER_EPHEMERAL_DH_KEY

vRealize Hyperic 5.8.4 has the default configuration for Tomcat 6 of encrypted connection parameters. Using the latest browsers Chrome and Firefox can thus collide with the message “Server has a weak, temporary Diffie-Hellman public key”. Fortunately, this can be quickly remedied by improving the “Connector” section in the file serwer.xml. Described by me change can be implemented in both versions, installed on a Windows server and the installed as vRealize Hyperic Appliance.

EMC MirrorView configuration on the EMC VNX arrays.

By building their own Disaster Recovery solutions often reach for solutions based on data replication between storage arrays. One such solution (let us add that the cheapest) is EMC MirrorView. It is a very simple and easy to set up service fully cooperating with VMware Site Recovery Manager (SRM). LUN replication can be done synchronously or asynchronously, in the framework of assimilation theory and terminology refer you to the StorageFreak blog where colleague Tomek exactly everything described. We will focus on MirrorView configuration directly on the VNX arrays, in my case are VNX 5200 and VNX 5300.

PernixData FVP Freedom Edition – Installation and configuration.

I work as an Systems architect in the design and implementation work, passed through my hands a lot of solutions (mainly under the testing of new technologies). Honestly I say that PernixData FVP very positively stand out against other solutions providers readings acceleration feature (from disk arrays). As the only solution also provides writes acceleration on the server side. We do not have any hardware requirements (eg. a dedicated flash card) and operate in fully automatic mode (just point datastore and VM). PernixData FVP 3.0 Freedom Edition is available for free, license restricts us to one vCenter and up to 128GB Cache in RAM (flash is not supported). If you use for example SSD as VMware vFRC (vFlash), PernixData adds another, ultra-fast acceleration layer!

VMware Tools 10.0.0 with support for Microsoft Windows 10

On 09/03/2015 VMware released VMware Tools 10.0.0 (without much publicity). This version is fully compatible with vSphere 5.x and 6.0, at this moment it should be downloaded yourself. The most important change is the addition of support for Windows 10. After installing in Windows 10 a new version of VMware Tools system is properly recognized in vCenter, there are also new drivers, including the graphics card!

Configuring VMware VASA for the EMC VNX 5200 in vSphere 5.5 (bypassing "unknown_ca" error)

Anyone in an attempt to configure VMware VASA (native) in vSphere 5.5 for EMC VNX 5200 (and for the other models of the vnx2) know that it is not possible. It is a known bug confirmed by VMware (not included in vSphere 6.0) who does not know when it will be removed (if any). The solution to this problem is to install on any operating system (eg. Linux or Windows) EMC SMI-S agent, connect VNX to agent and registering it in vCenter as the Storage Provider.
