Data Domain Virtual Edition – installation and integration with Veeam Backup.

As I have not once wrote, EMC deserve great applause for the approach to the subject releasing their products in the community version. This allows us to get acquainted with a number of solutions, including the latest one, which is Data Domain Virtual Edition. If you do not know what it is, I hasten to explain. It is a device that can function as a NAS or as a software tape library (VTL) and used as a backup repository (generally). Thanks to incredibly efficient deduplication algorithms, in a relatively small space we are able to cram a huge amount of data. Add to that the replication between devices, and several other useful features and you have a really interesting solution supported by most backup solutions (eg. EMC Avamar, Veeam Backup). In this year was released virtual version of Data Domain, which is distributed as a OVA file and includes a community license. This license allows the use of space 0.5T RAW (after deduplication safely accommodate 3T or more standard data), replication, encryption, and DD Boost ( support for external solutions).

VMware Log Insight – BIG-IP F5 Management Pack

Quite recently appeared BIG-IP F5 Management Pack for VMware Log Insight, this solution can give insight into the traffic on the Virtual Servers to the people that normally do not have access to the interface of BIG-IP (and not only for them). As we know, BIG-IP includes a module Analytical Application Visibility and Reporting (AVR), this module collects all the necessary statistical information and it is required to send information to the VMware Log Insight. Information in the dashboard are grouped as follows:

VMware Log Insight – Trend Micro Deep Security management pack.

As everyone already knows, anyone who currently have a vCenter Standard license, can now install VMware Log Insight 3.3 for vCenter with license for 25 OSI. This is excellent news, Log Isight is a very good product and its popularity continues to grow and grow. Deep Security Manager stores (and shows) all the necessary statistics for the last 24 hours or the last seven days (even though the same alerts can be stored for much longer). Good idea is to redirect all alerts from security policies to external SIEM, which in our case is VMware Log Insight.

EMC ScaleIO – Installation and configuration in Linux.

Some time ago I describe the installation ScaleIO in VMware vSphere, this time we install ScaleIO using virtual servers running CentOS 7. The great advantage of EMC ScaleIO is its enormous versatility and lack of critical requirements that would have to meet. To construct own storage resource with high efficiency do not have hours to analyze compatibility lists or wonder what we buy and how much it will cost. We can use what we have at hand. Any server (or workstation) with internal drives. They can of course also be a virtual machine, you may ask: why? EMC ScaleIO can be an excellent replacement for distributed file systems (open source) type GlusterFS. If you need a few Linux servers with a shared resource (eg. under Apache) that reside in two locations (and we do not have array-based replication) ScaleIO this is a good option.

Veeam Backup v9 – Datastore Command Aborts

Storage overloading during the execution of backup can result in many unpleasant errors. One of them is the SCSI Command Abort, it appears when the HBA is overloaded or when the queue command (q-depth) is full. In both cases, the effect is the same, in SCSI host subsystem commands that will not be executed at a specified time are deleted. This means a dramatic drop in performance and increase latency in milliseconds. The backup method adopted in virtual environments, where we read the VM from one place and save their data elsewhere, means that during the backup we need to process large amounts of data. Incorrect or laid-back setting (eg. backup schedule) can overload the entire SAN infrastructure in our environment.

My first EMC Elect achievement unlocked.

The 2016 EMC Elect were announced today and  I am very proud to have been included in this group amongst 71 other IT professionals. I was waiting for this information forward and I will not hide that for me is a big thing. Although it is not official certification, its “only” community award from people that operates in an EMC environment. I have to admit that the path of development, vision, strategy  and EMC products generally very me “lie” and with great pleasure I crunching their solutions. In my opinion, EMC is a decisive leader when it comes to solutions for storage and cloud (very often you can read on the Internet that a other company released ANSWER for the EMC product . It should be up to date with the EMC/Dell company and keep track of her ideas, I in any case I’m not going to let go and you can expect many more entries on this blog devoted to the EMC.

Ah, well, one more thing, I checked the list and it looks like I’m the first man from Poland who won the EMC Elect award!
