vExpert 2015 – From Zero to Hero!

With undisguised pride, inform that I have been honored with the VMware vExpert 2015! This title makes me all the more satisfaction that my adventure with virtualization began relatively recently, from vSphere 5.0 and I do not feel (yet) virtualization guru! This blog was created as an English version of my Polish blog Piszki Lab less than a year ago. Its readership is growing every day what fills me with pride. I hope that everyone find useful information here. Blog stats, from Zero to Hero:

Veeam Backup – Consolidation is needed (unable access file since it is locked)

We recently bought a Veeam Availability Suite v8 Enterprise edition, we absolutely love this solution, it is simple and effective. In the era of applications written in Java positively distinguished by low demand for resources and speed. In Veeam Backup, on our View environment, deduplication ratio achieved x3,7 (for “thick” machines intended for developers). We are also holders of extensive private cloud based on vCloud Director, the ability to safely perform a backup of the environment is very important to us (and this functionality has Veeam Backup).

vRealize Hyperic – Upgrade old agents.

Hyperic is a great solution, monitor, send alerts, respond to events. In our environment, we have installed a huge amount of agents. After the last upgrade our Hyperic 5.8.0 server to vRealize Hyperic 5.8.4 faced the dilemma of how to perform the upgrade previously installed agents? The systems are different (Windows, Linux), also tasks (from a simple check disk usage on server to MsSQL performance metrics). We decided that the easiest and safest way is to manually update the agents from the vRealize Hyperic manager. Upgrade itself is very simple, with just a few “clicks”.

vCSA 5.5U2 – Authenticity of the host’s SSL certificate is not verified

After completing the upgrade vCSA 5.5 to the latest version in my Home Lab, when trying to deploy a new machine from template, I met with the following error:

sslerr1

This issue only affects vCSA, there is no solution for the moment, the workaround is described in this KB. The error only occurs when you have vCSA 5.5U2 and replace SSL certificate on the ESXi host to a new one. It does not help reconnect host on vCenter. To get rid of this message, we must stop the vCenter, log in as the root user on the vCenter appliance and run the following commands:

sslerr2

After running vCenter everything returns to normal.

BIG-IP F5 – Synchronize loadbalanced Workspace Portal 2.1 with loadbalanced Horizon View 6

One of the possibilities offered by Horizon Workspace Portal is the ability to run the assigned Horizon View workstation directly from the portal (eg. a browser tab using BLAST protocol). In this way, we can simplify access to services for our customers and employees (especially when accessing from outside our organization). This post is an extension and a summary of the topics described here and here (of course, reading them is a must). The process is as always simple and requires only a few additional steps.

Synology Network UPS (NUT) and ESXi 5.5

In my home Lab recently appear first ESXi server. For now, it is a fairly simple design, disk resources are made available from the Synology NAS. Both devices (NAS and ESXi) are plugged into the UPS CyberPower BS650E. Synology fully supports UPS (connected via USB) and can respond well to current decays. And what about the ESXi? Here we have the right solution. This solution is a ESXi client for Network UPS Tools prepared by Rene Garcia. The client (UPS Mon) is of course flexible and is able to connect to any NUT server. In this post I will describe the connection to the NUT running on Synology DSM.
